Bunion Surgery / Hallux Valgus Surgery - Dr. Christopher Lu
Bunions / Hallux Valgus are a common problem that can occur in both young and older individuals. It tends to run in families, can be exacerbated by shoe wear, and tends to get worse as you get older. Over the years numerous operations have been devised to surgically correct bunions. The majority of these operations involve breaking and re-setting the bone. In general it takes 6 weeks for a bone to heal and 12 weeks for a bone to heal as strong as it was before. The foot is typically swollen for approximately 4 months, and it usually takes 1 year before you forget that you had surgery on your foot. Vitamin D drops - 2000 IU / day and a good well balanced diet (minimum 1-2 eggs per day) - helps with bone healing.
Surgery is performed at Georgetown Hospital, which is located 30 minutes from Toronto Pearson Airport. Procedures are performed as a day surgery procedure under local anaesthetic and sedation. Operative time is approximately 45 minutes.
Post-operatively you are immobilized in a tensor bandage for 3-4 weeks. You need to keep this clean and dry. You have the option of purchasing a cast boot, post-op shoe, or knee scooter to help with mobilization. To help decrease the amount of post-op pain I recommend purchasing a cold therapy unit + foot / ankle attachment. Cold therapy reduces the need for post-op pain medication by approximately 50%.
